According to an email from Arapahoe County public information officer Ginger Delgado, two men were shot outside the store in the 2200 block of Quebec Street.

The two men were taken to a hospital, where the 29-year-old was pronounced deceased, Delgado said. He was identified Monday by the coroner’s office as Diego Jesus Lopez Manrrique, according to a statement.

The second man, who is not the suspect, survived the shooting, Delgado confirmed Thursday.

The coroner’s office determined Manrrique’s death was a homicide.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large, Delgado said. The shooting is under investigation.

Four killed in shooting in El Paso County https://www.denverpost.com/2023/12/07/fatal-shooting-swat-el-paso-county-sheriff/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 23:47:44 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5888299 El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies found four adults killed in a Wednesday night shooting after sending in a SWAT team to investigate the scene, the office said in a release Thursday afternoon.

According to the release, deputies initially contacted a man who had injuries that were not life-threatening outside in the 21000 block of Akawi Way after responding to the scene just after midnight.

“The initial information we got was that there could be a potential higher risk than what our patrol deputies are capable and appropriate to respond to,” Miller said on a phone call Thursday afternoon.

El Paso County spokesperson Sergeant Marcus Miller said Friday deputies called the SWAT team preemptively in the event of a worst-case scenario like a barricaded subject or hostage situation was happening, but Miller explained they had no reason to suspect any of these situations were actually happening.

The investigation later showed the shooting happened before deputies arrived at the scene, he said.

The relationships of the deceased are still yet to be determined, and there is no active threat to the community, the release noted.

Editor’s note: This story and headline were updated at 12:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, to note the “potential hostage situation” was only a worst-case scenario, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office had no reason to suspect such a situation was unfolding.

Denver area sees 4 murder-suicides in two weeks https://www.denverpost.com/2023/12/07/denver-four-murder-suicides-domestic-violence/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 22:36:21 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5885932 Four different murder-suicides happened within two weeks in late November.

The ongoing holiday season could be part of the reason why, said Director of Survivor Services at Safehouse Denver Natasha Alder, as domestic violence incidents could increase as family stress mounts.

“This time of year can be stressful for a lot of reasons, and some of those stressors can exacerbate violence,” Adler said via phone call Tuesday. “A lot of alcohol can be involved in family gatherings, people are tight with money because they are buying presents … people are just spending time together, which could be consequential.”

At least three of the incidents in late November were deemed domestic violence or happened between family members.

On Nov. 18, Northglenn police officers responding to a call in the 11700 block of Delaware Court found an adult male and female dead inside a residence. According to a release issued about the incident, a preliminary investigation indicated that the two had a domestic relationship and that the man, Gardell Neal, killed the woman, Lucille Ruibal Rivera, before killing himself.

A few days later, three men were found dead in a residence in the 8400 block of Franklin Drive by Adams County sheriff’s deputies in an apparent murder-suicide on Nov. 21. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says that it is still awaiting lab results and reports from the coroner’s office, and that the investigation is still ongoing. It is not clear whether the men were related.

On Nov. 27, an apparent murder-suicide shut down part of Jefferson County with an overnight shelter-in-place order after police responded to a call of a father firing a gun at a mother, according to a release issued by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The release notes that after barricading himself inside the home, the father fired shots at his three children who had escaped outside, as well as responding officers. Officers eventually found the mother and father dead inside the home.

On the same day, two men were killed in a murder-suicide outside a Holiday Inn in Parker. Both had gunshot wounds when police arrived. According to the Douglas County Coroner’s Office, the men were brothers.

“Domestic violence is all about power and control,” Adler said Tuesday. “If there’s an incident that escalates to the point where an abuser loses power, their one leverage point against their partner is gone … that’s where we see suicide come in.”

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner.

CBI continues search for 17-year-old Maggie Long’s killer 6 years after her murder https://www.denverpost.com/2023/12/01/maggie-long-murder-cold-case/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 23:47:12 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5882664 The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said that it is continuing to investigate the December 2017 death of Park County high school senior Maggie Long, noting a $75,000 reward for information critical to the case, according to a release.

The announcement comes six years to the day after Long was found murdered in her burned-down home after an apparent burglary, according to the cold case report. She was coming home to gather supplies for a concert at the school she was helping organize.

“Our quest for justice for Maggie remains steadfast,” said Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw in the release. “The dedicated members of the Maggie Long Task Force, including the Park County Sheriff’s Office, the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and our state and federal partners have never stopped the search for those responsible for Maggie’s death and will continue to follow every lead until we find resolution in this case.”

Several items, including guns, jade figurines and a safe were stolen from the home at the time of Long’s death, and the house was set on fire, authorities say. Police say they have reason to believe that more than one person may have been involved in her death.

The bureau would like anyone with information on the crime to call the Maggie Long Task Force tip line at 303-239-4243 or to email maggie.long.tips@state.co.us. Those providing tips can remain anonymous.

“It will take one person with one piece of information that will help our investigative team bring resolution to this case for Maggie, her family and the Bailey community,” McGraw said.

Colorado middle schoolers voting to name reintroduced gray wolves https://www.denverpost.com/2023/12/01/colorado-middle-schoolers-wildlife-center-voting-gray-wolves/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 22:44:18 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5882715 Although they were not old enough to vote on bringing gray wolves back to the state, Colorado middle school students will have a say in the wolf naming process.

The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center has announced a naming contest for the first gray wolves that will be reintroduced into their original native range. Until Dec. 20, middle school students in grades five through eight will have the opportunity to vote once for their favorite name from a list of 14, with the results to be finalized no later than Jan.1.

The contest comes just before the first gray wolves are set to be officially reintroduced to Colorado for the first time since they were killed off in 1940. The reintroduction is the product of a voter-approved 2020 bill that directed Colorado Parks and Wildlife to reintroduce some gray wolves back into the state by late 2023.

According to the announcement, the name with the most votes will be assigned to the first wolf released into the range. The naming process will then go in sequential order by the next highest vote tally for each subsequently released wolf. The total number of wolves that will be introduced is unknown.

The center sent an invitation to participate in the contest to all reachable Colorado public middle schools, according to the announcement. Representatives from schools that were not contacted can participate in the contest by sending an email to wolfcontestco@gmail.com with “Wolf Naming Contest” in the subject line.
