Colorado weather: Avalanche warning, road closures in place amid Sunday’s snowstorm

Drivers should be expect dangerous conditions on high country roads, and hikers should avoid traveling in the backcountry avalanche terrain, the NWS said

12:29 p.m.: Wild Basin Road in Rocky Mountain National Park has reopened, the park service announced on social media. Trail Ridge Road/U.S. Highway 34 on the west side of the national park will remain closed through Sunday at the Grand Lake Entrance, and will be reassessed Monday morning.

11:43 a.m.: U.S. Highway 40 has reopened in both directions between Steamboat Springs and Kremmling, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said on social media.

10:45 a.m.: Berthoud Pass has reopened after multiple vehicles that stalled, blocking the highway, were cleared, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. The road reopened in both directions at 10:45 a.m.

10 a.m.: Rabbit Ears Pass, Muddy Pass, Berthoud Pass, and Loveland Pass are all closed in the mountains, according to the NWS.

9:30 a.m.: An avalanche warning is in effect for the Park Range, Ruby Range and Elk Mountains Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Large and dangerous avalanches will be very easy for people to trigger, especially on the northerly and east-facing slopes, the National Weather Service said. Large avalanches will also release naturally. Travel in backcountry avalanche terrain is not recommended.

7:56 a.m.: Trail Ridge Road/U.S. Highway 34 in Rocky Mountain National Park is temporarily closed at the Grand Lake Entrance due to 1 foot of snow, the national park posted on social media Sunday. Wild Basin Road is also closed in the park due to snow.

7:49 a.m.: U.S. Highway 40 is closed in both directions between Steamboat Springs and Kremmling due to safety concerns, the Grand County Sheriff’s office said on social media Sunday morning.
