Through Nov. 12. The Boulder Jewish Film Festival could hardly come at a more relevant time. Films that delve into the complexity and nuance of the Jewish experience during this moment of conflict also include works whose creators have been affected by the ongoing war with Hamas, producers said.

Programmers of the Nov. 2-12 fest have responded to this moment by adding topical elements to the fest, they said, including a 5-film segment that celebrates Israel’s 75th anniversary and the short film “The Boy,” by Yahaz Winner, who died in a Hamas attack on his kibbutz, as well as “Sirens” (in the Shorts program).

The centerpiece is the live-scored silent film “The Man Without a World” on Nov. 9, with closing-night film “Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage?” arriving on Nov. 12. And a dozen-plus more. All screenings at the Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut St. in Boulder. Tickets: $18-$25 via thedairy.org/boulder-jewish-film-festival.

Denver Arts Week’s free, low-cost events

Friday-Nov. 11. Free and cheap admission to arts events is what Denver Arts Week is all about, and the annual celebration of Mile High creativity returns Friday, Nov. 3-Nov. 11 with three free events at the Buell Theatre and McNichols Building, plus a fall edition of the city’s popular Denver Public Art Tours.

Presented by the city agency Denver Arts & Venues, this year includes the “Community Cloth” exhibit tour and the Colorado Panorama Denver Public Art Tour (both Nov. 7), a “Woven Together” reception at the Buell (Nov. 8), and the “Culture Cloth” exhibit tour and curator discussion (Nov. 9).

Along the way, Denver Arts Week’s website rounds up dozens of deals and special events that focus on local visual artists, musicians, galleries, murals and street art. The week kicks off Friday, Nov. 3, with expanded First Friday Art Walks across the city’s creative neighborhoods, organizers wrote, plus a free Night at the Museums on Saturday, Nov. 4. See denver.org/denver-arts-week/events for more.

A powerhouse “Don Giovanni”

Saturday-Nov. 12. Many of us save up to splurge at the theater this time of year, whether it’s for a play, touring Broadway musical or dance performance. If you’re looking for a once-a-year big ticket show that’s going to blow your hair back, Opera Colorado is back with its vigorous take on “Don Giovanni.”

It’s the nonprofit company’s first staging of the Mozart blockbuster in ten years, producers wrote, with baritone Bruno Taddia in the title role and Danielle Pastin, Ellie Dehn and Kerby Baier as the avenging women who have crossed paths with our titular cad.

Opera ain’t cheap, but in terms of spectacle and talent, it’s worth it for a show like this. Runs Saturday Nov. 4, as well as Nov. 7, 10 and 12 at Ellie Caulkins Opera House, 1385 Curtis St. Tickets: $49-$225 for opening night, as low as $39-$185 for other performances, via operacolorado.org.

Recycle paint

Coloradans love to recycle anything and everything, but disposing of leftover paint can be a hassle. PaintCare, a free paint recycling program with more than 150 drop-off sites across Colorado (most in paint and hardware store) can help. The program accepts all paint brands, regardless of where they were purchased, and most house paints, primers, stains, sealers and clear top coatings (varnish and shellac). All sites accept up to five gallons per visit. Leaking, unlabeled and empty paint cans are not accepted. Funding for the recycling program comes from a small fee added to the price of new paint sold in Colorado. paintcare.org/states/colorado/

The Mile High Stash podcast forces Denver musicians to face the apocalypse https://www.denverpost.com/2023/03/28/mile-high-stash-podcast-guests-adam-perry-denver-colorado-music/ Tue, 28 Mar 2023 12:00:55 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5598727 If the zombie apocalypse comes to Colorado, you’ll know where to find Adam Perry.

“Instead of pleasant desert-island scenario, it’s in Ward,” said the 42-year-old former drummer for Gasoline Lollipops and The Yawpers, and a longtime contributor to Boulder Weekly and Westword. “Maybe I’m stranded. Maybe I’m at the risk of being eaten. What would I listen to?”

Perry’s Mile High Stash podcast asks “what five albums you’d take to a remote Colorado cabin during a zombie apocalypse, armed with nothing but food, water and a crank-powered Victrola,” he said. “Oh, and we get to know our guests along the way.” Each episode is more conversation than list of bullet points, starting with a biographical chat before moving onto the quintet of favored albums, and dipping back and forth throughout.

It’s patterned after another one of Perry’s great loves, the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs, which has been going strong since 1942. Thanks to Perry’s music connections — and a lot of forced downtime due to a perilous battle with COVID — his own Mile High Stash burst out of the gate on Nov. 13 with an impressive lineup of Colorado music heavies. Perry’s interviews have since ranged from jazz-funk singer Hazel Miller to members of The Lumineers, DeVotchKa, Flogging Molly, The Velveteers, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and Leftover Salmon.

Now the punk-rock lifer, who also interviews national artists such as Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, David Bowie), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), and Ben Nichols (Lucero), is prepping his podcast’s first live taping for April 1 at RiNo’s Number 38 — a free, all-ages show that includes an interview and performance from Denver’s Foxfeather.

Despite touring the globe with his previous acts — which he left in order to spend more time with his young daughter — Boulder-based Perry is not thrilled about the idea of appearing on stage without a drum kit.

“I played my first concert with a rock band when I was in sixth grade, so I’ve been playing drums in front of people for a very long time,” said Perry, who recorded a podcast episode with former Denver Post writer and current Atlantic senior editor John Hendrickson to talk about their shared, lifelong stuttering. “I don’t sing and I don’t talk on stage, so to be at the front and have nothing but a mic is (freaking) terrifying.”

Live music-and-interview programs, such as Boulder’s 31-year-old eTown, are nothing new in Colorado, nor are podcasts of any stripe that are hosted by and featuring men. Perry’s well aware of that and working to diversify a guest list that he knows could easily default to cisgendered white dudes.

He’s interviewed multiple members of the all-women folk band Big Richard, Demi Demitro and drummer Baby from The Velveteers, music legend Miller (his favorite interview, ever, he said), and has upcoming episodes with Rachel Sliker of the River Arkansas (April 3) and concert photographer Lisa Siciliano. He’s also invested in highlighting Indigenous voices, he said, including stand-up comic Joshua Emerson and Americana veteran Cary Morin.

“I’m trying to put a lot of thought into it instead of just saying, ‘This is so hard because I live in Boulder,’ which is not very diverse,” said Perry, a Pittsburgh native who moved to Colorado in 2008.

Perry has been immersed in Colorado music for nearly two decades, and that’s helped garner modest but vital sponsorships from businesses that sell cannabis, guitars, tattoos, liquor, concert tickets, and coffee. Some offered money (Perry wouldn’t say how much) to support the podcast before the first episode had been released.

Despite his stage fright and lack of experience leading a live show, Perry is looking forward to the Number 38 public taping, which he hopes won’t be the last.

“The more people there, the more it puts me at ease,” he said. “Red Rocks was the largest crowd I’ve ever played to (as part of Denver Film’s Film of the Rocks series), and it’s the least nervous I’ve been. You can feel that people just want you to do well.”

City Park Jazz 2023 reveals full lineup, dates for outdoor summer concerts https://www.denverpost.com/2023/03/14/city-park-jazz-2023-schedule-lineup-dates/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 17:13:34 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5587540 Denver’s longest-running free concert series returns June 4 with a blast of saxophone and continues Sundays through Aug. 6 in Denver’s City Park, organizers announced Tuesday.

The 37th season of the all-volunteer City Park Jazz kicks off with a performance from Sarah Mount and the Rushmores the first week in June, led by Mount’s muscular and versatile saxophone playing, and wraps up with the sultry, self-described “gypsy jazz” of La Pompe Jazz.

The concerts draw between 8,000 and 12,000 per show, or about 100,000 total attendees over the summer, said board member and director of marketing David Flomberg.

The popular series, which presents free summer concerts on Sundays at the City Park Pavilion, is a nonprofit venture supported by volunteers and sponsorships, organizers said. Its 10-week run brings food trucks, vendors and thousands of blanket- and cooler-toting residents to the area around City Park Pavilion.

“In our continuing tradition of exploring the incredible diversity of jazz as an art form, we’ve put together a great lineup for 2023,” said Andy Bercaw, president of the City Park Jazz board, in a statement. “We’ve got everything from soul to funk to straight-ahead to blues to Latin and more. After such a long winter, we couldn’t be more excited for another summer of sweet sounds and delicious eats at City Park Jazz!”

Shows run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday nights starting June 4. The shows are all-ages and no RSVP is required. For more information or to volunteer, visit cityparkjazz.org, and see the full lineup below.

Love in the time of “infla-dating”: Denver spots to take a date that won’t break the bank https://www.denverpost.com/2023/02/01/infladating-cheap-denver-spots-date-night-valentines-day/ https://www.denverpost.com/2023/02/01/infladating-cheap-denver-spots-date-night-valentines-day/#respond Wed, 01 Feb 2023 13:00:06 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5536730 Valentine’s Day is around the corner, but times are admittedly tough right now: a looming recession expected later this year, high inflation and surging prices for gas and even eggs.

Welcome to love in the time of “infla-dating,” a new buzzword for choosing cheap dates to keep finances afloat. But just because it feels like the world is ending (one silver lining: every generation has experienced that panic) doesn’t mean the search for romance should fizzle out.

Here are some Denver spots to take a date that won’t break the bank. (Pro tip: You can kick things off on the right foot with flowers beforehand. Trader Joe’s bouquets typically sell for as low as $3.99 at the Capitol Hill location at 661 Logan St. You’re welcome.)

1. Two words: Happy hour.

It’s a tried-and-true first date. Meet at a bar for happy hour and stay until sparks fly (or leave as soon as “the ick” sets in).

Adelitas Cocina Y Cantina, 1294 S. Broadway, is lauded for daily happy hour deals from 3 to 6 p.m., including a $9 house margarita, $2 for chips and salsa and $2 tacos on Tuesday.

Angelo’s Taverna at 620 E. 6th Ave. offers a truly compelling happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close daily. What’s not to love about $1 raw house oysters of the day, $6 toasted ravioli and $2 off wines on tap?

River at 3759 Chestnut Place doubles as a bar and art gallery, so that’s two birds with one stone. Monday, score margaritas for $3 each from 6 p.m. to close. On other days, take advantage of the $5 negroni, whiskey sour and dirty martini or level up with the $6 Old Fashioned.

And, if the splurging mood strikes, there’s boozy boba. Enough said.

2. A solid dive bar never goes out of style.

Dive bars constitute the backbone of America. A date who turns their nose up at a well-loved watering hole? That’s the first red flag.

As it turns out, Denver is a treasure chest of dives. Try Don’s Club Tavern at 723 E. Sixth Ave. for a round of pool or to cozy up in a booth — just try to avoid making eye contact with the bras hanging above the shuffleboard table.

Stop by an ATM before hitting P S Lounge at 3416 E. Colfax Ave. Women are greeted with roses at the cash-only dive, and free house shots are handed out upon entry.

Other options include Bar Bar at 2060 Champa St. and Candlelight Tavern at 383 S. Pearl St.

3. Going for a more refined vibe? Museum date it is.

Plan a date that coincidentally falls on a free or discounted day at a local museum.

Upcoming free days at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science at 2001 Colorado Blvd. include Sunday, Jan. 29, Monday, Feb. 6, and Sunday, Feb. 26.

Free days at the Denver Art Museum at 100 W. 14th Ave. Parkway take place on Saturday, Jan. 28, Tuesday, Feb. 14, and Tuesday, March 14.

At the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver at 1485 Delgany St., the first Saturday of each month costs a single penny for Colorado residents. Consider this motivation to get that out-of-state driver’s license finally changed.

Health care workers, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries and museum professionals can get in free every day.

4. Not a drinker? No problem. How about coffee instead?

If falling in love in a coffee shop is the vibe, then here’s good news: The Mile High City’s got plenty of options.

Pablo’s Coffee at 630 E. Sixth Ave. has it all. Grandfathers are probably catching up over coffee at nearby tables, while plants line the windows and art hangs on the walls.

Roostercat Coffee House at 1045 Lincoln St. beats Starbucks’ prices by a long shot: $4 for a large cortado or drip coffee, $4.50 for a large cafe au lait and $4.75 for a large latte. Check out the specialty lattes to satiate that sweet tooth.

Convivio Café at 4935 W. 38th Ave. offers much more than a simple cup of coffee. Opened for business in November, the city’s first women-owned, Guatemalan-inspired, bilingual café is sure to impress.

Getting coffee also quickly reveals whether a crush can properly pronounce the word “espresso.” So, bring it back to 1998 and embrace this “You’ve Got Mail” rom-com moment.

5. Watch live entertainment and arts without emptying that wallet.

It’s a music enthusiast’s dream to meet her soulmate at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, but admit it — those ticket prices can make a heart drop.

Thankfully, other local venues also provide unforgettable experiences with lower bottom lines.

Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox at 1215 20th St. — a former brothel — now offers a different type of adult entertainment. Plan to attend a free dinner show or shell out some cash to watch other live performances, with tickets currently selling as low as $10.

Mercury Cafe at 2199 California St. hosts its poetry open mic on Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. Admission is free, but arrive early to secure a table. Grab a cocktail and enjoy as both amateur and published poets bare all.

A personal favorite is Sofar Sounds, a music events startup company hosting intimate performances at surprise venues across different cities. In Denver, more than 70 events are planned (as of Jan. 25). Choose a show in any of the available Denver neighborhoods. The venues and musicians aren’t initially disclosed, and are only described online as an “incredible secret space,” “downtown views,” “cozy cocktail lounge” and more. The day or so before the show, an email will indicate the physical address. Gigs are usually BYOB — bring your own bottle. Prices typically range from $20 to $26 each.

The annual free-days calendar offered by the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District has been released for 2023, covering the metro area’s biggest nonprofit institutions, from the Denver Art Museum and Denver Botanic Gardens to the Denver Zoo.

The aforementioned are considered Tier 1 organizations in SCFD’s sales tax-enabled funding, and with another great haul this year — $70.5 million, or a 13.2% year-to-date increase over 2022 — they’re poised to support even more nonprofits.

Here are the highlights for Tier 1 organizations. Some organizations are free every day, such as Broomfield Veterans Museum, Foothills Art Center, Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and the Aurora History Museum, according to SCFD.

Check scfd.org/find-culture/free-days for the full, updated list, and a printable bookmark for the institutions listed below. Most require online reservations, and all events are subject to change or cancellation.

Jan. 1, 2023. While many adults work off their hangovers and sleep deprivation on New Year’s Day, kids are raring to go. That makes it the ideal time to look for free, all-ages and low-cost activities that tire them out while you plot the rest of your day.

One such activity is ice skating at Downtown Denver Rink (Skyline Park), which is completely free — so is Denver International Airport’s, but we’ll let you decide if you want to go anywhere near there — while Aurora’s Southlands and Loveland’s WinterSkate offer cheap skate rentals and time on the ice. Lace up and bring a jacket! Visit our friends at milehighonthecheap.com for details on these activities and many, many more.

“Sports Soup” is a “dream show” for Matt Iseman.

Ring in the new year with laughs

Both runs also feature a rare, all-ages show at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31. Some shows are sold out; $25 for remaining seats at comedyworks.com. The Denver Improv at Northfield is also offering shows, Dec. 30-31, from stand-up Capone ($27, denver.improv.com).
